After months of deliberations by industry, government and farm animal welfare groups, CLT is on the verge of becoming a truly national program. Even before CLT's Alberta launch in 2007, people behind the program knew that livestock transport doesn't stop at the border, and that the best long-term solution was a Canada-wide program that is also recognized in the US.
Now in December 2010, there is a unified resolve on the part of stakeholders to make this national program a reality. A national working group representing Canada's livestock and poultry industry organizations is coordinating the creation, funding and launch of the new program. Working with AFAC and other farm animal care organizations, this group has submitted a comprehensive project plan and funding proposal to AgriFlexibility (Agriculture Canada's funding program). This proposal is now in its final review stages.
Meanwhile, the need for livestock transport training and certification continues. In cooperation with the national working group, industry stakeholders are updating course modules for beef, dairy and poultry. These three modules are expected to set the standard and the format for the new program's course material.
