The CLT Team

Lorna Baird

Lorna is Executive Director of Alberta Farm Animal Care (AFAC) and the Program Manager for CLT. Lorna joined AFAC in February 2010, she has a PhD in Animal Science from Queen’s University of Belfast. Raised in Winnipeg, she obtained her BSc. in Agriculture (Animal Science) from the University of Manitoba and followed that with an MSc. in Agricultural Sciences (Animal Welfare Program) from the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Industry Advisory Team

The development of the CLT program is dependant upon the advisory input from those working in the handling, hauling and meat processing industries. As well, senior enforcement personnel and key researchers provide valued input. Every step of the CLT development process has been vetted by our dedicated advisory team. This ensures the most current management practices and regulatory requirements form the foundation of this skill based program. Click here for the Advisory Team list. Original CLT Development Team

CLT was launched in May 2007 after two years of development. The original team included Tim O'Byrne, Susan Church and Mikki Shatosky.

Tim O'Byrne was responsible for leading the development of the CLT course content, all interactive video and other training material. He liaised with the CLT industry advisory group and CFIA to ensure collaborative input. Currently Tim is based out of Las Vegas. He provided consultation through his company Calico Beef Consulting on:

  • Livestock transportation issues
  • Animal welfare projects
  • Technical manuals
  • Training sessions (feedlots, trucking companies)
  • Expert witness testimonials
  • And he is the editor of Working Ranch Magazine.
Tim O'Byrne

Susan Church was the CLT Program Manager. Susan's work experience included 15 years as Manager of the Alberta Farm Animal Care (AFAC) Association. She has over 35 years experience working with the Alberta and Canada livestock and red meat industries.

Susan worked with industry to address legislative policy, extension and research related to livestock welfare. She managed the CLT planning, funding and broad industry support.

Susan is currently enjoying retirement and is involved with several agriculture and land conservation committees.

Susan Church

Mikki Shatosky was responsible for overseeing and coordination the development of the CLT program. Her vast knowledge of animal agriculture and computers guided the team through development of the program. 

Mikki was the point person for the trainers and truckers, she developed the brand and web site, edited content and managed the development of the materials. She worked with AFAC for 12 years.

Mikki continues to offer project management services through her company Declercq Design and plans to spend more time on the farm.
