How to become a Canadian Livestock Transporter?

The Canadian Livestock Transport (CLT) certification program is based on driver / handler experience as follows:

 

Commercial licensed, experienced

The CLT program defines an experienced commercial driver as having more than 2 years experience hauling a given species of livestock.

To receive the CLT Driver certification you must:

  1. Request and complete the CLT affidavit including livestock hauling experience. Your employer must sign off on your skill level. Bring the affidavit to the classroom training session.
  2. Attend the one-day Classroom Training Session and successfully complete the written test.
  3. In the future on-line training will be available (June 2013)

As a Canadian Livestock Transporter you:

  • are recorded in the CLT trucker database
  • have access to pertinent updates and notices
  • enjoy improved availability
  • may qualify for competitive vehicle insurance premium rates
  • receive a Canadian Livestock Transport wall certificate and wallet size card

Commercial licensed, entry level drivers

The CLT program defines an commercial licensed, entry level driver as having less than 2 years hauling a given species of livestock.

To receive the CLT Driver certification you must:

  1. Attend the one-day Classroom Training Session and successfully complete the written test.
  2. Successfully complete the on-site CLT Practical Evaluation.

As a CLT Driver you:

  • are recorded in the CLT trucker database
  • have access to pertinent updates and notices
  • may qualify for competitive vehicle insurance premium rates
  • receive a Certified Livestock Transport wall certificate and wallet size card

Non Commercial drivers and others

If you do not intend to haul livestock commercially you may choose to participate in the Classroom Training Session only.  For example the following groups and individuals may wish to participate in the classroom session:

  • Handlers and dispatchers
  • Processing facilities
  • Auctionmarts
  • Feedlots

Anyone connected to the livestock industry can attend these sessions.

 

Classroom Training Session

The one-day Classroom Training Session is a skills-based instructional program that certifies the ability of the participant to perform the necessary job functions of a qualified livestock transporter. The session also includes an instructional DVD and group discussion is encouraged. The session:

  • reinforces the transporter’s right to refuse to load unfit or unhealthy animals by supplying industry with AFAC comprehensive Guidelines for the Handling of Unfit Livestock (cattle, swine, sheep).
  • addresses (in depth) trailer rollovers and recovery procedure.
  • includes the National Pork Board's Transport Quality Assurance (TQA) program, complete with Canadian-specific content. The National Pork Board will recognize successful CLT hog-component participants with full TQA certification.

TOCAll participants receive a training manual (click on the Table of Content right to view) including copies of all pertinent codes of practice books, regulations, research papers and valuable reference materials to help drivers recognize and deal with livestock unfit for transport.

If you chose to complete the Classroom Training Session only and have successfully completed the open book written test you will receive a Certificate of Completion Certified Livestock Transport Classroom Training Session.

Practical Evaluation

In the on-site Practical Evaluation each participant will demonstrate their practical skills and basic knowledge of loading, transporting and unloading live animals in a controlled environment. The CLT evaluator will complete an assessment of the demonstration.
